Born and raised in Skopje, I will offer you a perspective on the history and present-day life of the capital of the
Republic of North Macedonia, a city that has also served as an important centre of various states and imperial
provinces throughout history.
From Neolithic heritage, ancient tribes and kingdoms, the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, medieval Slavic
kingdoms, Crusaders and Normans, and Sephardic refugees, to the Balkan Wars, national revivals and the
emergence of modern nation-states, the transition to socialism and the return to capitalism — this is the historical
trajectory that has shaped the cultural heritage of Skopje and the wider region.
A visit to Skopje encompasses poetry and romanticism, revolutionary movements, gastronomy, stories of emperors
and saints, Pashas and rebels, prostitution and bohemian life, sports and celebrations, natural and political disasters,
the destruction of some neighbourhoods and the birth of others.
Above all, it explores the constant dialectical forces that continue to reshape life in this city, situated in the Skopje
Valley, on the banks of the River Vardar, and surrounded by mountains, mountain passes and the spectacular Matka
Canyon.
